When exploring thermomechanical properties of a material, TMA remains one of the simplest and most important techniques. The basis of TMA is the change of sample dimensions (e.g. growth, shrinkage, movement) as a function of temperature, time and applied force. TMA provides information about the dimensional change, coefficient of linear thermal expansion, material anisotropy, softening temperature, glass transition and the linear thermal expansion. These changes are caused by changes in the free volume of a polymer that is known to be related to its viscoelasticity, aging, penetration by solvents, and impact properties.
