Test the flexural properties of Materials with ASTM D790 and ISO 178

The Flexural Test provides the flexural modulus of a material as an indication of the material’s stiffness. Testing can be modified to simulate the temperature which recreates the intended end use conditions, since the physical properties of a material may differ depending on the ambient temperature.
 

Type of Flexural Test

  • Polymer- 3-point flexure test. Specimen deflection is usually measured by the crosshead position. Test results include flexural strength and flexural modulus.
  • Wood and composites - 4-point flexure test. The 4-point test requires a deflectometer to accurately measure specimen deflection at the center of the support span. Test results include flexural strength and flexural modulus.
  • Ceramic (brittle material) – The 3-point flexure test provides flex strength data only, not stiffness (modulus). The 4-point test can also be used on brittle materials. Alignment of the support and loading anvils is critical with brittle materials. The test fixture for these materials usually has self-aligning anvils
