Recently I came across a FoxNews article (‘Medical breakthroughs on the horizon for 2013’ by Dr. David Samadi) that got me excited. The reason why I pursued the medical device industry was to be in a field that impacted people; a field that matters. I don’t care who you are – anyone with a loved one who has ever been sick, or needed surgery, etc. has been impacted by medical devices in some way. What impresses me is how medical devices are always pushing the boundaries.
Some of the highlights Dr. Samadi’s article talks about are: a non-invasive way to detect melanoma, universal red blood cells, lengthening limbs with a telescoping titanium intramedullary rod, using MRIs to help diagnose dementia, sensors in joint replacements to tell doctors how the implant is performing, lab grown organs, and an implanted wireless chip that can help to administer medications regularly.
Medical device innovations such as these promise us one thing, and that is fantastic solutions to our most common health issues. Being a part of this industry is incredibly rewarding in that sense; I love being a part of a team that helps companies bring devices such as these to market. Because at some point, one of these devices I’ve gotten to work on will impact a friend of family member.
