Location, Location, Location

January is usually that time of year where I start day dreaming about a vacation somewhere warm and sunny. California is always on the list. California has a lot more to offer than just its beautiful beaches and amazing sights. A recent article on the biomedical industry had some amazing statistics about California.

Did you know that 21 percent of all developing biomedical products are from California? I think that is an incredible figure. There are 2,321 biomedical companies in California that employ more than 150,000 people. California, the Bay area in particular, makes huge contributions to the industry. Other regions that are well known for high concentrations of biomedical companies are Boston and Minnesota.

More and more, we are seeing growth of some smaller epicenters of biomedical technology. For example, Warsaw, Indiana is lovingly known as the “Orthopedic Capital of the World”. The Glens Falls, New York area is known as “Catheter Valley”. Pittsburgh and Ohio are also regions where development in biomedical technology is on the rise. There are a lot of financial and governmental incentives for companies to develop biomedical products in these regions, and I think they are well warranted.

I am certainly biased to the biomedical industry over other industries, because I think it is great to see people developing technologies that can ultimately help save and improve lives. To know that there are so many other people across the nation, and in my hometown, that are committed to this goal is encouraging, and enlightening. No matter what your location is, we are all working towards the same end.
